How are Adoptive Families Screened in Iowa?
We fully screen all of the hopeful adoptive families you see on our website with a home study. A home study is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a licensed social worker or adoption agency to evaluate the suitability of prospective adoptive parents and the environment in which a child would potentially be raised. This is one of the longer parts of the adoption process as it requires careful reviews to make sure families are ready to adopt.
A requirement for every type of adoption, a home study is an overview of their life that is used by the court system to ensure you are ready for adoption. A home study typically includes:
-
Gathering and submitting personal documents, like birth certificates and marriage licenses
-
Each member of the adoptive household completes an interview with the home study worker
-
Home visits with the social worker
-
Background checks (such as child abuse clearances and criminal record checks)
-
Character references from people who know you
-
And more
It’s an opportunity for prospective parents to showcase their readiness and commitment to providing a nurturing environment for their child. Additionally, it offers you peace of mind, knowing that careful consideration is being given to the well-being of your child. We work with thousands of families across the country and how we screen hopeful adoptive families is part of what makes us so successful.

No two adoptions are exactly identical because the choices you make will impact how your adoption plays out. But here is a breakdown of our four step process that adoptive families will go through to complete the home study:
The Adoption Home Study
As a national agency, we’re licensed in states across the country, including Iowa. In the states we’re licensed in, we’re able to perform home studies. In the states we aren’t licensed in, we partner with local professionals to ensure the home studies are completed. As a one-stop shop for the entire adoption process, our full-service, national adoption agency is licensed in Iowa to provide home study services.
Documentation Review
During the home study, the adoptive family submits extensive documentation. This includes:
-
Medical records
-
Background checks
-
Proof of income
-
References
-
Personal written statements
The social worker reviews these documents to assess the family’s readiness for adoption.
In-Home Visits
A licensed social worker conducts in-home visits to observe the family’s living conditions and assess the safety and suitability of the home environment for a child. The visit includes checking for safety measures such as:
-
Working smoke alarms
-
Covered electrical outlets
-
An up-to-date fire extinguisher
-
Functioning locks on doors and windows
-
Sharp objects and firearms are locked away safely
-
Chemicals and cleaning products are safely stored
-
Cleanliness
Interviews
The interview includes questions that help the social worker assess their readiness for adoption. Each member of the household participates in interviews. These interviews explore various aspects, such as parenting styles, communication and family dynamics. The goal is to understand how the family functions on a day-to-day basis and how an adopted child can fit into their routine, from getting-to-know-you to adoption-specific queries.
